Wristwatches are not only timepieces, but also valuable pieces of jewelry that often have high sentimental value. To extend their lifespan, there are some important care instructions to follow.
watch glass
The watch glass is particularly sensitive and can be damaged by impact or friction. High-quality watches often have sapphire crystal, which is the hardest glass. If a scratch does occur, it can often be removed with an eraser. Plastic lenses scratch more quickly, but can be repaired using special polishing methods. Mineral glasses are harder than plastic, but cheaper than sapphire glass.
Storage and handling
Avoid dropping the watch and keep it safe. If you store multiple watches in one place, make sure they are separated from each other to avoid scratches. The watch should be handled carefully when putting it on and taking it off.
Heat, water and chemicals
High temperatures, water and chemicals can damage a watch. You should expose your watch to the blazing sun as little as possible. Also avoid direct contact with chemicals such as lubricants, household cleaners, cosmetics and perfumes, as they can damage the bracelet, case and seals. If you come into contact with water, you should pay attention to whether the watch is waterproof and to what extent.
Watch band
The ideal bracelet length is important to avoid slipping back and forth. Leather bracelets are subject to greater wear and tear due to moisture, chemicals, sweat and abrasion than stainless steel bracelets. Depending on how frequently you wear it, you should change the band as soon as it shows signs of wear.
By following these care tips, you can ensure that your watch lasts and maintains its beauty.

Mechanical and electromechanical watch movements
Clocks are designed to tell time and there are two types of clockwork: mechanical and electromechanical. Mechanical watches can be divided into automatic watches and hand-wound watches. Both types work with gears and a spring mechanism that stores the energy, which is converted into a constant rotational movement via the gearbox.
Automatic movements
Automatic watches are mechanical watches that wind themselves using the wearer's arm movements. A spring in the movement stores the energy, which is drawn up by the movements of the wrist via a rotating rotor. The advantages of automatic watches are, on the one hand, the ease of handling, as these watches do not need to be wound, and, on the other hand, the smooth running of the watch, which is due to a spring that is always evenly tensioned. It is advisable to wear automatic watches regularly or store them in a watch winder, as the watch can stop if the rotor stops moving for a few days.
Hand-wound movements
Hand-wound watches are mechanical watches that are wound manually. To do this, turn the crown clockwise until you feel resistance. The spring is tensioned over the crown and the number of turns is limited to avoid over-winding. Mechanical watches are suitable for watch lovers with a sense of tradition, but they need to be wound every one or two days to ensure full running time. In terms of accuracy, mechanical watches sometimes deviate from atomic time by up to 30 seconds per day.
Electromechanical watches
Compared to mechanical watches, electromechanical watches have an electronic component that is responsible for the electrical winding. The most common electromechanical watches are quartz watches.
Quartz movements
Quartz watches are watches that require electrical energy to drive the movement. Most quartz watches use a battery as the energy source. An electronic quartz oscillator emits clocks or oscillations that deform the quartz through an electrical circuit. This causes vibrations in the quartz, which drive the movement and set the beat of a quartz watch. The display of time and date can be analog, digital or analog-digital. The big advantage of a quartz watch is its high level of accuracy. However, the battery needs to be changed every few years.
Solar Works
Solar watches are wristwatches that work like quartz watches, only without a battery. Instead, the energy source is light. Using solar panels under or on the dial

In this text you will find all the important information about the water resistance of wristwatches.
If your watch is rated as waterproof, you will find the marking either on the caseback or on the dial. A water resistance test is carried out according to the DIN 8310 or ISO 2281 standard, in which the water pressure on the watch is tested over a certain period of time.
The units bar, atm and meter are used, whereby a specification of 3 bar/3 atm/30 m means that the watch is splash-proof.
A watch with a water resistance of 5 bar/5 atm/50 m can be worn while soaking in the bathtub, while a watch with a water resistance of 10 bar/10 atm/100 m can also be worn while snorkeling.
For hobby divers and snorkeling enthusiasts, a watch with at least 20 bar/20 atm/200 m water resistance is recommended.
However, it should be noted that water resistance is not a permanent property and a watch's seal is subject to normal wear and tear, especially with external factors such as salt water, sweat and large temperature differences. It is therefore important to rinse the watch thoroughly with fresh water after contact with salt water and to avoid sunbathing and then jumping into the water.
